Re: Selfishness. Everyone is selfish. Even Mother Theresa did what she did because SHE wanted to do it. Sounds selfish to me. To be truly unselfish people must do what they don't want to do. But even then why would they do something they don't want to do? Because they want to avoid being selfish. So they are still doing what they (selfishly) want to do.

If an altruist passes a beggar on the street the altruist must give the beggar at least enough money so that they both have an equal amount, otherwise the altruist is being selfish.

If an altruist encounters a person who needs a kidney he must donate one of his own.

If an altruist encounters a person who needs a heart replacement and his is suitable but he doesn't give it to the needy person, who is the altruist most concerned about, the needy person or himSELF?

If an altruist speaks he is expressing HIS own thought because he (selfishly) wants to.

I think it was Ayn Rand (whom Skinner derides) that said to be truly altruistic all you can do is shut up and die.

    Re: Social Security
I would like to ask Skinner, "Do you think theft is OK, yes or no?" She cannot possibly hold the views she does without answering "yes".

She is incredibly ignorant. She says she wants to be able to put a little money into the SS ponzi scheme so that she will have something at the end of her life. HELLO! That's called SAVINGS! And we could all do it if the government would let us keep the the fruits of our labor. Everything the government does was once done by free enterprise. Then the thugs came along, took over everything, and convinced people like Skinner (through their propaganda machine, the schools) that it couldn't be any other way. I would wager there were FEWER people in poverty before government tried to eradicate it and that people were BETTER educated before the government co-opted education.

Keep up your great work, Judge. You are a hero and role model.

We don’t need any new social or commune-ism, we tried that already, and we’ve had the evidence it doesn’t work, from the very beginning. Russians and Germans now know that it sucks. Now it’s just the Latin Americans that need to figure it out for themselves, and reject it.

The French woman stresses the pint that the French socialist government is financially heavily in the red, and what, the US capitalist government isn't?? Is she crazy.

Razza, the US govt. is in the red precisely because of it's socialist tendencies, just like the French. You make the mistake of thinking our government is capitalist. Per the Constitution, our government CANNOT be capitalist, nor can it be Socialist, as these are economic systems that our government should not engage in. The Constitution does not support a government that seeks to maximize it's own profit, nor does it authorize a government that seeks to redistribute wealth. You simply do not understand the proper role of government.

And for the same reason–overgrown entitlement programs. In America we also suffer the Military Industrial complex, the burden of empire

    Hi Rod,

I like what you said about selfishness. I think you were sort of echoing something I think Ayn Rand said. I think that comes from The Virtue of Selfishness.

But yeah, the social security thing looks like a mess. I guess one thing I can say is that, for one of these programs, there were a lot more workers than retirees when the program started. But now, the ratio of workers to retirees has decreased. I can't remember if it's for SS or something else, but regardless, it's a key factor behind this mess.

I guess everyone is selfish in some way or the other, it is just that only when we see it in others, do we get peeved. It is easier to forgive our own selfish action than it is to forgive others'. “Selfishness is that detestable vice which no one will forgive in others, and no one is without in himself” – Henry Ward Beecher
