“We can’t afford to see our housing prices fall any more”, “Don’t want to see the housing market collapse” …BS! That’s exactly what should happen. Why? That’s Capitalism buddy!
It involves RISK! When people make unsound investments, buy into inflated markets, when they spend without thinking, there is risk and you may not come out a winner. Then other people can have their opportunity. What happens when a house gets forclosed? It goes up for auction at real market price. The wealth that wasn’t there in the first place is expunged from the books, values are realigned. Not only that, but I am absolutely OFFENDED that my tax payer dollars are going to support institutions like Freddie and Fannie that support the redistribution and safeguarding of wealth for those who have made poor decisions. Today, the average worker cannot afford a home. Why? It’s not that everyone just needs to make more money, nobody can keep expecting that. It’s not that the demand for housing is so high that supply can’t keep up. It’s quite simply that there is so much money flowing, pushed along by all kinds of governement and political support at all levels, that those who sell the house, as a product, would be insane to sell it for what it’s really worth. And those that buy in to that system as buyers or sellers are invested in it and don’t care about the next guy who wants to just have somewhere to live. I could go on about this, really with somebody would address this point: that all those home owners, who having bought into thie over inflated market, are the very same people who WILL NOT QUESTION the system that simply couldn’t exist without my tax dollars!
